Early Learning and Play

Training Aim

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competence to provide an inclusive, creative, and playful inquiry-based learning environment. Learners will be able to describe the current and historical contexts of play, recognise the benefits of and contribute to different types of play (to include creative and inclusive play) and recognise and reflect on the role of the adult in play.

Learning Outcomes

  1. The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competence to provide an inclusive, creative, and playful inquiry-based learning environment. Learners will be able to describe the current and historical contexts of play, recognise the benefits of and contribute to different types of play (to include creative and inclusive play) and recognise and reflect on the role of the adult in play.
  2. Describe play in historical and current contexts including the role of Aistear and Siolta in promoting and supporting a play based ELC environment.
  3. Recognise the role of the adult in providing for and supporting children’s play through the curriculum and quality frameworks.
  4. Contribute to the planning of inclusive and creative indoor and outdoor learning opportunities, appropriate to children’s emerging interests, development, and needs, unpinned by theory.
  5. Contribute to the implementation of an inclusive and diverse ELC inquiry-based curriculum, providing individual and group learning opportunities.
  6. Engage in individual and collective reflective practice to support professional development and pedagogical practices

Assessment Method

  • Assignment – 30%
  • Portfolio – 70%
