Child Development

Training Aim

The purpose of this module is to provide learners with an introduction to the development of children from ages 0-8. Learners will explore a range of theories surrounding child development and understand key concepts such as developmental norms and the role of adults in the development of children. The module will develop the learners understanding of attachment and the importance of supporting children to form secure and positive attachments in the context of an ELC setting. Learners will be introduced to child observation studies and will have an understanding of some of the primary methods for observing children.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the holistic development of children (age 0-8) using a broad range of developmental and learning theories.
  2. Identify the role of the adult and other stakeholders in supporting the holistic development of the child.
  3. Describe a range of factors that may influence or impact the development of the child.
  4. Describe a range of observation methods and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each. Select an appropriate method and complete a child observation.
  5. Explore a range of theories on attachment, explain the importance of supporting children to form secure and positive attachments and investigate the ways children in ELC can be supported in forming trusting and secure relationships.
